More news: Samantha Mostyn has resigned from her role as chair of Aware Super following her appointment as Australia’s next governor-general.

Mostyn has been chair of the superannuation fund since 1 March 2023.

What they said: Aware Super chief executive Deanne Stewart said: “While we’re of course saddened to be losing her, we appreciate that this appointment will allow the nation as a whole to experience her empathetic approach and commitment to improving the lives of all Australians.

"Sam brought great dedication to the role of chair, and brought with it a passion for the issues that matter to Aware Super’s 1.1 million members, such as enhancing their retirement outcomes and improving equity in the superannuation system, particularly for women.”

Samantha Mostyn appointed as next governor-general

The news: Samantha Mostyn will become Australia's next governor-general, after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese picked the businesswoman to replace outgoing David Hurley.

The numbers: Mostyn will become Australia's 28th governor-general, and the second woman to hold the role after Quentin Bryce.

She will be sworn into office on 1 July.

The context: Mostyn is a trained lawyer and gender-equality and anti-domestic violence advocate. She held roles with Beyond Blue and Reconciliation Australia, and became the first female AFL commissioner in 2005.

What they said: "Ms Mostyn is a modern optimistic leader for our modern and optimistic nation. Her leadership reflects our enduring Australian values of equality, fairness and our responsibility to build a better future for the next generation. I am confident [she] will discharge her duties as governor-general with her customary dedication, creativity and compassion and an unwavering sense of service to our nation," Albanese said.
