Senator Fatima Payman announces Australia's Voice party
The news: Independent senator Fatima Payman has officially announced her new political party, Australia’s Voice.
The context: During a press conference, Payman said the new party would not be affiliated with any religion or ethnic group.
Media reports noted that while the former Labor senator did not provide details on the party’s policy platform, she indicated it would “reject the status quo”.
Payman said that no candidates had been selected yet, but those chosen would be aligned with the party’s values. She said there had been interest from “disenfranchised Labor voters”, “former Labor candidates” and members of the National Party.
In July, the senator resigned from the Labor party to sit as an independent following her rebellion over Gaza.
What they said: “So many of you have told me with emotions in your hearts, we need something different. We need a voice. It is this cry for change that has brought us here today. Because we can no longer sit by while our voices are drowned out by the same old politics. It’s time to stand up, to rise together and to take control of our future,” Payman said.
“And so it is with great humility and deep responsibility that I announce the formation of Australia’s Voice, a new political party for the disenfranchised, the unheard, and those yearning for real change.”
