Seven appoints Ray Kuka as news boss
More news: Seven West Media has appointed Ray Kuka as director of news and current affairs, following the departure of Anthony De Ceglie to the NRL.
Kuka was most recently De Ceglie’s deputy. He has worked at Seven for more than two decades, first in Brisbane, and later in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, London and China.
Kuka will start in the role on 19 May, taking over responsibility for the company’s news and current affairs division, which includes the Seven Network, the West Australian newspapers, and the company’s digital evening newspaper, The Nightly.
What they said: “Ray will build on the drive for high quality journalism that defines our news services. The continued integration with sport and the progress we have made building 7NEWS’ digital presence will also remain priorities,” Seven managing director and CEO Jeff Howard said in a statement.
Seven chair Kerry Stokes thanked De Ceglie for his leadership and wished him success in his new role as CEO of the NRL’s newest team, the Perth Bears.
“The SWM team is full of the best operators in the business. Ray is the ideal person to lead Australia’s number one News and Current Affairs team to an even better future,” Stokes said.
Seven news executive Anthony De Ceglie to depart for NRL
The news: Seven West Media’s director of news and current affairs Anthony De Ceglie is set to depart the company to take up the role of CEO of the NRL’s newest club, the Perth Bears.
The context: The appointment was announced by the NRL in a statement on Thursday. It brings to an end a six-year stint for De Ceglie at the Kerry Stokes-controlled media company.
He has served as an executive for the past year and before that was editor-in-chief of the West Australian newspapers for more than five years.
Seven did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
What they said: “To succeed in Perth, you need a well connected local who knows how to get things done and has a can do attitude,” said Peter V'landys, chair of the Australian Rugby League Commission, in a statement.
“Anthony is a brilliant operator with a proven track record and a genuine Western Australian, and I am excited about what he can do for us as we grow rugby league in the WA market.”
