The news: Shigeru Ishiba from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party has won the race to become Japan’s next prime minister.

The context: The winner of the party’s leadership election is all but assured to become the country’s leader as the party has control over parliament’s powerful lowe chamber, Reuters reported.

Ishiba is Japan's former defence minister and will replace the incumbent prime minister Fumio Kishida.

Last month, Kishida announced he would not seek a second term. His public support has fallen amid a wide-ranging party slush fund scandal, ongoing inflation and the yen’s slump.
