SIMPEC lands $11m construction contract for Tianqi Lithium Kwinana project
The news: Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia (TLEA) has awarded an $11 million contract to ASX-listed West Star Industrial subsidiary SIMPEC for construction work at its Kwinana lithium hydroxide processing plant in Perth.
The context: TLEA is a joint venture that is 49% owned by ASX-listed IGO and 51% owned by dual Shenzhen and Hong Kong stock exchange listed Tianqi Lithium. While TLEA owns the processing operation it is managed by Tianqi Lithium Kwinana.
SIMPEC will deliver structural, mechanical piping works at the TLEA plant. New mechanical equipment will be integrated into the existing plant. The project will commence immediately and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of calendar year 2026.
The facility has struggled to meet nameplate production capacity and in July 2025 IGO fully wrote down the value of the assets.
What they said: “We look forward to partnering with Tianqi Lithium Kwinana to deliver this program of works safely, efficiently and to the highest standards. We extend our thanks to the TLEA team for their ongoing support,” SIMPEC managing director Mark Dimasi said.
