Sky News to host Chalmers, Taylor for treasurers’ election debate
The news: Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor will face off in a debate hosted by Sky News Australia next week.
The debate will be moderated by Sky News Australia’s business editor Ross Greenwood and will be broadcast from 7:30pm AEDT on Wednesday next week.
The context: In response to questions at the National Press Club after handing down the budget, Chalmers said he would be happy to debate Taylor “at least weekly” during the election campaign.
Chalmers said prospective treasurers should be obliged to front the National Press Club and go head-to-head in economic debates. He praised former Coalition treasurer Josh Frydenberg for agreeing to debate him in the lead up to the 2022 federal election.
What they said: “The Federal Election is a contest about who can best manage Australia’s $2.3 trillion economy,” Greenwood said in a statement released Friday.
“From the cost-of-living and energy prices, from migration to home affordability, from personal taxes to employment, the Treasurers of our major political parties must not only have the right strategies, but they must also be able to effectively communicate those policies to households and business.
“This debate is your best chance to assess those policies and the skills of Jim Chalmers and Angus Taylor.”
