The news: Casino operator SkyCity Entertainment has announced that its New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) will open in February 2026, following delays by its construction partner Fletcher Building.

The context: SkyCity said the delay means it won't begin its own commissioning and operational readiness activities at the NZICC until the second half of 2025.

In a separate announcement, Fletcher said it expects to hand over the NZICC to SkyCity by 30 June this year.

NZX and ASX-listed Fletcher has been troubled by repeated problems at the Auckland project since the construction site caught fire in October 2019 and has been forced into extensive remediation.

The project had previously been due for completion by late 2024.

What they said: "The date is later than we'd hoped but offers contingency, as well as certainty for our customers," said SkyCity CEO Jason Walbridge.

"We are thrilled to name February 2026 as the date we can open the NZICC's doors to the New Zealand public and the world."

"The NZICC is a world-class facility that will transform the visitor and events economy in Aotearoa."
