The news: South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been ousted by the country's Constitutional Court, which upheld the parliament's impeachment following his retracted declaration of martial law last year.

The numbers: The move means that a presidential election must be held within 60 days, according to the country's constitution.

The context: The unanimous court ruling will see current Prime Minister Han Duck-soo continue to serve as acting president until the new president is inaugurated.

Acting chief justice Moon Hyung-bae said Yoon violated his duty as president with his martial law declaration on 3 December, taking actions that were "a serious challenge to democracy".
