Star delays handover of 'sensitive' Austrac case documents
The news: Star Entertainment Group has secured a two-day delay of what its lawyers describe as "highly sensitive" documents to the financial crime regulator, Austrac, as the money-laundering lawsuit against the casino operator prepares for a June trial.
Star initially pushed for a one-week deadline delay to the document handover, in a short online mention before Federal Court of Australia Registrar Amy Lee.
But Lee said Star had already had a week since it was issued with a notice to produce the documents and if it fails to hand over the data on Wednesday, it must provide "substantial information" as to why.
The context: Austrac announced its lawsuit against Star in November 2022, alleging serious and systemic non-compliance with Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws.
The matter is listed for an eight-day hearing from 2 June, with Federal Court Judge Michael Lee presiding over the matter. Lee is currently mid-way through the Australian Securities and Investments Commmission's case against current and former Star executives and directors.
