Star Entertainment settles disputes with tax commissioner over junket tour payments

The news: Casino operator Star Entertainment has settled its disputes with the Commissioner of Taxation in relation to the GST and withholding tax treatment of payments by the group to junket tour operators between 2013 and 2020.
The numbers: Star had previously paid the commissioner around $88 million of the disputed amount. As part of the settlement, the Commissioner will refund Star around $33 million.
Star will, therefore, take a charge of around $55 million for the year ending 30 June 2026.
The company said it ceased dealings with junket tour operators in October 2020.
