The news: Steven Miles will likely be Queensland's new premier after co-runner Shannon Fentiman pulled out of the leadership race.

The numbers: Miles was endorsed by outgoing premier Annastacia Palaszczuk soon after she announced her sudden resignation on Sunday. Fentiman threw her hat into the ring on Monday, but she stood down to back Miles on Tuesday morning.

The context: Annastacia Palaszczuk was Australia's longest-serving female premier, and the first woman to lead her party to three consecutive state election wins. She is the last of the Covid-era premiers to leave office following the resignation of Victoria's Daniel Andrews in September.
