The news: Super Retail Group chair Sally Pitkin will retire at the company’s annual general meeting on 24 October, with non-executive director Judith Swales to step into the role.

The numbers: Swales, who joined the Super Retail board in 2021, will step down from her current position as head of global markets at dairy giant Fonterra on 31 July. She has previously served in leadership positions at Heinz Australia and Goodyear Dunlop ANZ.

The Supercheap Auto and Rebel owner announced in 2022 that Pitkin would step down from her role in 2024.

The context: The company said Swales emerged as a standout candidate because of her background in high-performing retail businesses and expertise in digital transformation.

The appointment comes at a time when the retail giant is facing a likely legal claim from two employees over the non-disclosure of a relationship between its chief executive Anthony Heraghty and the former head of human resources.

Super Retail said non-executive director Howard Mowlem will also retire from the board on 29 June, with a formal search underway to find his replacement.
