Superpower Institute appoints Baethan Mullen as inaugural CEO
The news: The Superpower Institute, a think tank founded by Rod Sims and Ross Garnaut to position Australia at the forefront of the net zero economic transition, has appointed its inaugural CEO.
The context: Baethan Mullen, a senior public servant with more than 20 years of public policy and advocacy experience will oversee the institute's policy and research efforts. Mullen was most recently head of the Essential Services Commission.
The Superpower Institute was founded in 2023 and has advised on how the Australian economy can successfully transition to a net zero future.
It has produced policy on how Australia can develop new capabilities in industries including green iron and aluminium, the export of renewable energy, and research on how greenhouse gas emissions can be more accurately monitored.
What they said: “Baethan’s experience in competition issues and economic regulation is essential to The Superpower Institute," Garnaut said.
"Since inception, our value-add as an institute is focused on unlocking the policy, regulatory and market incentives needed to make Australia an economic superpower and providing practical knowledge to governments and industry to realise this opportunity."
