The news: Gambling giant Tabcorp has tapped Hong Kong Jockey Club executive Michael Fitzsimons to be its first chief wagering officer.

The numbers: Fitzsimons has over 20 years of global sports betting experience across the European Union, US and Asia. He is expected to start his new role in the first half of 2025.

Tabcorp shares rose nearly 5% to $61.75 in early trading on the ASX.

The context: Fitzsimons will oversee all core wagering functions including digital, retail, tote, trading, product and marketing. The role is part of the company’s new executive leadership structure that was announced in December, with the appointment subject to regulatory and probity approvals.

Tabcorp managing director Gillon McLachlan said Fitzsimons is one of the world’s most sought after wagering executives with his deep knowledge of international sports betting, trading and tote.

What they said: “Michael is a rare find — he knows digital and retail wagering and is one of the few people in the world who can connect both to grow a wagering product,” McLachlan said.
