The news: Telstra’s mobile network has been hit by a nationwide outage, with users reporting a loss of mobile coverage and “SOS” or satellite indicators appearing on their devices.

The context: Telstra has not disclosed the number of affected customers or locations, and the cause of the outage remains unknown.

According to Downdetector, which tracks user-reported service outages, thousands of customers began reporting outages from about 3am, with incidents recorded across all mainland state capitals, SMH reported.

The outage has also affected Telstra-owned and wholesale mobile providers including Belong, Aldi Mobile and Superloop.

Telstra said on its website it is “looking into an issue affecting some mobile calls and data connections”, and advised customers experiencing connectivity issues to retry their connection. The company added that it is “on it and will share an update as soon as it’s fixed”.
