The news: Online furniture retailer Temple & Webster has appointed Genesis Capital managing director Susie Sugden as its next CEO to succeed co-founder and incumbent CEO Mark Coulter, who will move into an executive chair position on 1 July.
The context: Sugden was Temple & Webster’s chief commercial officer and chief marketing officer between 2016 and 2020. Sugden has been managing director portfolio since February 2025 after joining as an operating partner in April 2024.
She has also been CEO of Love to Dream, a sleepwear brand for babies, co-founder and managing director of Indonesian e-commerce site Lazada Group, which was sold to Alibaba in 2016, and Indonesian e-commerce provider Paraplou Group.
Coulter said the leadership change would give him “more capacity to focus on strategy and longer-term growth opportunities”.
Incumbent Temple & Webster chair will move into the role of lead independent director. Temple & Webster co-founder Conrad Yiu will be appointed chair of the company’s technology committee to oversee the company’s technology and AI roadmap.
What they said: “I am so proud of everything we have achieved at Temple & Webster. We have navigated the early startup years, public market turbulence, global pandemics and cost of living crises, to firmly become one of the most successful e-commerce businesses in Australia,” Coulter said.
Sugden said: “I look forward to working with Mark once again and leading this incredible team to deliver sustained, long-term growth”.
