The Star Sydney’s casino licence suspension extended to March 2026
The news: The suspension of The Star Sydney casino licence will remain in place for at least another six months to the end of March 2026.
The context: The Star Sydney’s casino licence has been indefinitely suspended since 17 October 2022, with Nicholas Weeks appointed as manager by the NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) to allow operations to continue while The Star undertook remedial efforts.
The manager’s appointment was due to expire on 30 September 2025, but has now been extended to 31 March 2026. This followed a submission to the Commission from The Star and the manager which led it to determine that the casino licence should remain suspended.
In late August 2025, the Star delivered a $472 million unaudited loss for FY25 as it battled to stay liquid under the impact of regulatory changes, implementation of The Star’s remediation program and loss of market share.
What they said: “We acknowledge that there is more work to do but we remain committed to delivering on our Remediation Plan to support the safe and compliant operation of our business,” The Star’s group CEO and managing director Steve McCann.
“The Star is committed to continuing its transparent and constructive relationship with the manager, the NICC and the New South Wales government, and demonstrating to all its stakeholders its suitability as a licence holder as soon as possible.”
