TPG Telecom investigating iiNET cyber incident
The news: TPG Telecom is investigating a cyber incident affecting the personal information of active iiNet customers, after it was confirmed on Saturday.
Early investigations suggest that an employee’s stolen account credentials was used to access the iiNet order management system and there isn’t any evidence “to suggest an impact to our broader systems or other customers”.
The numbers: The unknown third party gained unauthorised access to the order management system and extracted around 280,000 active iiNet email addresses and 20,000 active iiNet landline phone numbers, in addition to “inactive email addresses and numbers”.
TPG also said that the third party appears to have accessed “around 10,000 iiNet user names, street addresses and phone numbers and around 1,700 modem set-up passwords”.
The context: TPG said that no credit, banking or financial information have been compromised. The telco further noted that no driver’s license numbers or ID documentation details "were disclosed as a result of this incident".
TPG told the exchange that after confirming the incident on 16 August the company enacted its “incident response plan and removed the unauthorised access to the system”.
The telco has engaged external IT and cyber security experts to assist with the response and is actively engaged with relevant government authorities including the Australian Cyber Security Centre, the National Office of Cyber Security, the Australian Signals Directorate and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
TPG will be contacting impacted customers to “advise of any actions they should take and offer our assistance”. Non-impacted iiNet customers will also be contacted to confirm whether or not they have been affected.
