Treasury appoints new FIRB members

The news: Treasury has announced the appointment of Linda Apelt, Kellie Benda and Sarah Pearson to the Foreign Investment Review Board.

The numbers: The new FIRB board members will serve five year terms.

The context: Apelt was recently Agent‑General for Queensland in the United Kingdom and the Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner. Benda has held executive roles at AGL and Origin, and currently serves on boards at Aurora, Midway and Geoscape as a non-executive director. Pearson's specialities lie in tech, data and innovation and she currently serves on multiple boards and advisory councils. The appointments take the number of women serving on the FIRB board to five out of nine.

What they said: "The Albanese Government is committed to renewing, refocusing and renovating Australia’s economic institutions and ensuring they have the right objectives, people and processes in place," federal treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement.
