Trump administration to take 15% of Nvidia and AMD China chip revenues, says FT
The news: Nvidia and AMD have agreed to give the US government 15% of revenues from chip sales in China as part of an arrangement with the Trump administration to obtain export licences, The Financial Times reported citing unnamed sources, including a US official.
According to the paper, the financial arrangement was a condition for obtaining licences for sales into the Chinese market granted last week, and covers revenues from Nvidia’s H20 chip and AMD’s MI308 chip.
The Trump administration has not yet determined how to use the money, the report says.
The context: Export control experts cited by the paper said no US company has previously agreed to pay a portion of revenues to obtain export licences.
The reported arrangement follows an April decision to ban H20 exports to China, which was reversed in June after Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang met Donald Trump at the White House. That decision drew criticism from US security experts, who said the H20 will help the Chinese military, a claim Nvidia rejects.
