The news: US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day Israel-Lebanon ceasefire beginning at 5pm Thursday ET (7am Friday AEST), after what he described on Truth Social as “excellent conversations” with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Neither country has confirmed the truce.

Trump also said he would invite both parties to the White House for direct talks. “Both sides want to see peace, and I believe that will happen, quickly!” he said.

The context: Lebanon and Israel held their first direct diplomatic talks in Washington this week, the first since 1993.

Before Trump’s announcement, Aoun refused a direct call with Netanyahu, telling Rubio it would be inappropriate given the ongoing airstrikes and destruction in Lebanon, The Associated Press reported. Lebanon’s presidential office said Aoun thanked Trump for his commitment to reaching a ceasefire as soon as possible.

The truce also comes after fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah had threatened to derail the separate two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. Pakistan’s army chief met Iranian officials in Tehran on Thursday in a bid to extend that broader truce but a second round of US-Iran talks has not yet been scheduled.
