Trump announces 100% tariff on foreign movies
The news: US President Donald Trump has announced that he plans to levy a 100% tariff on foreign films.
The details: Australia is among a crop of countries, including Canada and New Zealand, that offer lucrative tax offsets to Hollywood studios and other major US entertainment companies to produce their content locally.
Much remains unknown about how the tariff, which Trump announced on Truth Social on Monday morning, would work or how it will impact the world’s largest streaming platforms, which have ramped up global production in recent years.
Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner said the announcement was likely to send shockwaves worldwide.
What they said: “The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States,” Trump said in the post to Truth social.
“Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!
“Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”
