Trump calls for jailing of Chicago mayor and Illinois governor
The news: US President Donald Trump has called for Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois governor JB Pritzker to be jailed, stating that the two Democrats should be imprisoned for failing to protect federal immigration officers.
The context: Trump hurled the accusations on Wednesday via a Truth Social post without offering any evidence nor specifying what laws either official allegedly broke.
“Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect Ice Officers! Governor Pritzker also!,” wrote on the social media platform.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been undertaking raids across Chicago which have prompted protests to break out in the city. Trump responded by ordering the US National Guard troops to the country’s third-largest city, spurring criticism from Illinois’ Democratic officials.
Roughly 500 soldiers, 300 from the Illinois National Guard and 200 from Texas, are present in the greater Chicago area, according to US Northern Command.
