Trump cancels meetings with Iranian officials, says US help for protesters is ‘on its way’
The news: US President Donald Trump said that he has cancelled scheduled meetings with Iranian officials due to take place on Tuesday and that “help is on its way” as the protester death toll continues to climb.
The context: Writing via a Truth Social post, Trump called upon demonstrators in Iran to “Keep protesting” and to “take over your institutions.”
“Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY.”
Trump did not provide details about what the hep would entail, but the comments come after the President had said that Iran wanted to negotiate with the US after Trump threatened military action.
Iran has since claimed to have quelled the unrest which it argues “turned violent and bloody to give an excuse” for the US President to intervene.
The numbers: US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said on Tuesday that at least 1,850 protesters have been killed and at least 16,784 had been arrested in more than two weeks of anti-government demonstrations, CNN reported.
Reuters has also reported, citing an Iranian security official, that the death toll could be around 2,000 people.
