The news: US President Donald Trump has called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender,” threatened its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a social media post, and said the United States has “complete and total control of the skies over Iran.”

The comments come as evidence grows that the US could join Israel’s bombing campaign.

What they said: “We know exactly where the so-called “Supreme Leader” is hiding. He is an easy target, but is safe there - We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now,” Trump posted.

“But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians, or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”

Trump then went on to post on all capital letters: “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!”

The context: Trump’s social media posts and remarks come among reports of increasing pressure from Israel on Trump to join its military campaign against Iran’s nuclear program.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly wants the US to use its bunker-buster bombs on the Fordo site, which lies deep underground, The New York Times reported.

Trump had previously expressed hopes for a negotiated agreement with Iran but on his way back from the G7 summit, which Trump left early to address the situation, he told reporters on Air Force One “I’m not too much in the mood to negotiate.”

Trump’s comments come as the conflict entered its fifth day on Tuesday, with missile salvos continuing between Israel and Iran.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed new satellite imagery showed “direct impacts” at the Natanz nuclear site, where Iran enriches uranium.
