The news: After departing the G7 summit in Canada early, US President Trump said that he had not approached Iran for peace talks and that Tehran should have taken the earlier deal “that was on the table.”

The context: Posting via Truth Social, Trump said: “I have not reached out to Iran for “Peace Talks” in any way, shape, or form.”

“If they want to talk, they know how to reach me. They should have taken the deal that was on the table - Would have saved a lot of lives!!!”

Trump said that he is not looking for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, rather, that he is looking for a “real end” to the nuclear problem with Iran, indicating that he may send US representatives to meet with Iranian officials. Trump also advised residents to evacuate Tehran immediately, prompting thousands of residents to jam roads out of the capital as they attempted to flee.

Trump left the G7 summit ahead of schedule to return to Washington to manage the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday morning.

The early departure meant that Trump’s planned meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was cancelled. The meeting had been billed as a major opportunity for Albanese to raise US tariffs on Australia and stress the importance of AUKUS directly to Trump, whose administration is reviewing the pact.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a Beijing press conference on Tuesday that the US should use its influence with Israel to keep the conflict with Iran from spilling over. “China is deeply concerned about Israel’s attacks on Iran, which caused the spike of military conflicts. We call on parties to immediately take measures to ease tensions as soon as possible, prevent the region from spiralling into greater turmoil, and create conditions for returning to the right track of resolving issues through dialogue and negotiation.”

“Relevant parties need to take measures immediately to put a brake on the escalation of the conflict and bring down the temperature of the situation,” the spokesperson said.
