The news: Donald Trump has extended the US ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, hours after threatening to resume bombing, posting on Truth Social that Pakistan had asked him to hold off attacks while Tehran’s “seriously fractured” leadership works toward a unified proposal.
What they said: “I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” Trump wrote.
The context: The announcement came hours after Trump told CNBC “the military is raring to go” and that he did not want to extend the ceasefire.
It also came amid reports Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Pakistan had been cancelled.
Meanwhile, Iran told mediators its delegation would not leave Tehran to engage in talks until the US lifted its blockade, The Wall Street Journal reported citing officials familiar with the matter.
The Journal said neither side informed mediators the talks were cancelled, and Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey continued lobbying Washington to lift the blockade as a confidence-building measure, though their efforts had not yielded results.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the blockade “an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire.”
