The news: The US will pause its proposed new tariffs on Canada for 30 days after a call between US President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The numbers: Posting on X, Trudeau said he had a "good call" with his US counterpart, noting that Canada is implementing its C$1.3 billion ($1.45 billion) border plan to help stop the flow of fentanyl, with 10,000 frontline personnel working to reinforce the border.

Canada will appoint a "Fentanyl Czar", list cartels as terrorists, and launch a Canada-US joint strike force to combat organised crime, fentanyl and money laundering, Trudeau said.

The Prime Minister has also signed a new C$200 million intelligence directive on organised crime and fentanyl.

The context: The move follows a similar decision by Trump to pause new tariffs on Mexico for one month after its southern neighbour agreed to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops at the border to curb drug trafficking.

Both Canada and Mexico had announced countermeasures after Trump on Friday said the US would impose sweeping 25% duties on most imported goods.
