The news: US President Donald Trump has questioned the possibility of regime change in Iran, writing on his social media site, “if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!”

The context: The comments, posted on Sunday (Monday AEST), followed US military strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, described by officials as the “largest B-2 operational strike in US history.”

Despite Trump’s post, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and other Trump officials have said the war against Iran is “not about regime change.” Vice President JD Vance also earlier said, “we're not at war with Iran. We’re at war with Iran’s nuclear program.”

Earlier, Trump also said the B-2 pilots who carried out the Iran strikes over the weekend had landed in Missouri.
