The news: President Donald Trump has banned the citizens of 12 countries from entering the US, expanding his anti-immigration policies with a reinstatement of the controversial measure from his first term.

The context: Following Sunday’s attack in Boulder Colorado that targeted an event supporting Israeli hostages, Trump announced that the US would ban individuals from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, from entering the US.

The Colorado attack was carried out by an Egyptian national, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, who had overstayed his tourist visa in the US and had an expired work permit, according to federal officials.

Trump also placed partial limits on the entry of people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

“The recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted, as well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas,” Trump said in a social media video on Thursday.

"We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen... That is why today I am signing a new executive order placing travel restrictions on countries including Yemen, Somalia, Haiti, Libya, and numerous others."

The ban does not apply to individuals who already have a visa, are lawful permanent resident of the US nor teams traveling for the World Cup or Olympics. The ban will be effective from 9 June 2025.

Trump on Thursday also suspended the visas of foreign students seeking to participate in exchange programs at Harvard. “Harvard’s actions show that it either is not fully reporting its disciplinary records for foreign students or is not seriously policing its foreign students,” Trump said.
