The news: US President Donald Trump said the US will not make a deal with Iran to end the war until what he called “unconditional surrender” and the selection of “acceptable leaders”.

The context: Writing via a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “There will be no deal with Iran except unconditional surrender!”

“After that, and the selection of a great and acceptable leader(s), we, and many of our wonderful and very allies and partners, will work tirelessly to bring Iran back from the brink of destruction.”

The comments may be a signal that the White House is preparing for an extended conflict, despite officials having previously said their intent was not regime change in Iran.

Trump’s demand comes as Iran is poised to select a successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was killed in an airstrike on the first day of the war by the US and Israel almost one week ago.

Earlier on Friday, the Israeli military said it had moved to the second phase of its campaign, which saw it launch a new wave of attacks on regime infrastructure in Tehran and hit southern suburbs of Beirut with further airstrikes.

Kuwait said that it is cutting oil production as its storage capabilities fill up, the WSJ reported, indicating a broader storage crisis is developing posing risks to the global market.
