The news: US President Donald Trump said his administration will reveal the identities of buyers for TikTok within two weeks.

In a Fox News interview aired Sunday, Trump described the potential purchasers as “a group of very wealthy people” but gave no further details.

He said any sale would likely require approval from Chinese authorities.

The context: Congress last year passed legislation requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell its US operations or face prohibition from American app stores.

Trump has issued three separate 90-day extensions to prevent a ban on TikTok from taking effect, with the latest extension signed 10 days ago.

What they said: “We have a buyer for TikTok by the way. I think I’ll need probably China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it,” Trump said.

When pressed about the identity of the buyer, Trump said "will tell you in about two weeks."
