Trump tells allies to buy US jet fuel or ‘take it’ from Strait of Hormuz
The news: US President Donald Trump has told the UK and other US allies to buy American fuel or to “take it” from the Strait of Hormuz, as his frustrations with NATO members’ participation in the Iran conflict continue to grow.
The context: Writing via a Truth Social post on Tuesday, Trump said: “All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.”
He said that the US “won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!”
Trump then singled out France, accusing the nation of refusing to let planes headed to Israel “Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory. France has been VERY UNHELPFUL with respect to the “Butcher of Iran,” who has been successfully eliminated! The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!!”
Meanwhile, Italy refused to allow US warplanes taking part in the Iran conflict to refuel at the Sigonella air base in Sicily last week, Italy’s national news agency, Asna, reported on Tuesday. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto denied the permission to land because the US requests came too late and were not the normal operations and logistics flights covered under Italy’s bilateral agreements with the US.
The news comes as US gasoline prices climbed to an average USD4 per gallon for the first time since August 2022. The US’ nationwide average retail price for regular unleaded gas rose to USD4.018 a gallon on Monday, according to the American Automobile Association.
Earlier on Tuesday, US administration officials cited by the Wall Street Journal said that Trump told aides he is willing to end the US military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.
