The news: Donald Trump vowed to executives from oil majors that he will reverse dozens of the Biden administration’s environmental policies should he win the Presidency. According to a report by the Washington Post, Trump also used the opportunity to request USD1 billion ($1.51 billion) in funding for his presidential campaign.

The numbers: According to an analysis by the advocacy group Climate Power, oil donors have contributed more than USD6.4 million to Trump’s joint fundraising committee in the first three months of 2024. Oil tycoon Harold Hamm is arranging a fundraiser for Trump later in the year where more significant campaign funding is expected to be received.

The context: The meeting, which reportedly took place in Florida last month, saw Trump take aim at President Biden’s rules on emissions, electric vehicle promotion and his suspension on awarding permits for new liquefied natural gas exports.

At the dinner in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, around two dozen executives from oil majors including Chevron, Continental Resources, Exxon, Cheniere Energy and Occidental Petroleum among others, were told that the reversals would be made with immediate effect if Trump were elected.

Trump’s targeting of the oil industry to fund his campaign is a logical move, as the sector has weathered a slate of 100 new environmental regulations pushed through by Biden as the incumbent targets global warming. Trump, by contrast has referred to climate change as a hoax and rolled back over 125 environmental rules and policies during his term as President.

What they said: Dan Eberhart, CEO of Canary and Trump donor, told the Post: “Biden constantly throws a wet blanket to the oil and gas industry […] Trump’s ‘drill baby drill’ philosophy aligns much better with the oil patch than Biden’s green-energy approach. It’s a no-brainer.”
