Trump threatens 100% secondary tariffs on Russia if ceasefire deal isn’t agreed
The news: US President Donald Trump said that the US will impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russia should it fail to agree to a ceasefire deal in the next 50 days.
The context: Speaking alongside with NATO leader Mark Rutte from the White House on Monday, Trump also confirmed earlier reports that the US would send Patriot missile systems and other weapons to Ukraine.
“We’re not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they’re going to be paying for it,” Trump said. He said the US was sending “top-of-the-line weapons.”
"Billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment" would be purchased from the US by NATO allies, Trump said, which would then be “quickly distributed to the battlefield” in Ukraine.
Trump said that the situation “couldn’t be more simple, it’s just the way it is. I wish we didn’t have to do it…I’m disappointed in President Putin because I thought we had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to get there…It’s all talk, it’s all talk and then missiles go to Kyiv. It’s got to stop.”
Trump has previously discussed the possibility of imposing secondary tariffs, which would charge countries that trade with Moscow, as he has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin’s lack of commitment to ceasefire talks.
Rutte added: “If I was Vladimir Putin today, I would reconsider that I should take negotiations about Ukraine more seriously.”
