The news: US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that a “massive armada” of US warships is ready to carry out an operation he compared to the recent US mission in Venezuela, adding that time is running out to make a deal with the US.

The context: In a social media post on Wednesday, Trump said he wants Iran to come to the table to negotiate “a fair and equitable deal - NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS - one that is good for all parties.”

Trump threatened that time is running out and if Iran fails to make a deal the next attack would be far worse than the US strikes carried out on Iranian nuclear sites last June. The President’s call to agree to a deal on nuclear weapons comes despite White House claims that the June strikes eliminated Tehran’s ability to develop such weapons.

Trump has been threatening that the US may launch another attack on the country since Iranian authorities imposed a brutal crackdown on protests against the country’s leadership in December.

The US deployed military assets to the region in recent weeks including a strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

The numbers: Oil hit a four-month high after Trump's comments on Wednesday, with brent futures jumping to USD68.19 ($97.40) a barrel, extending a 3% jump in the previous session.
