The news: US President Donald Trump said Iran had “taken too long to negotiate a deal” and would now “have to pay the price”, in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The threat followed US strikes on about 20 Iranian targets around the Strait of Hormuz, a US official said, after Trump blamed Tehran for the downing of a US Apache helicopter.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they retaliated with missile and drone attacks on US bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, Reuters reported.

An unnamed US official said nearly all Iranian missiles and drones were intercepted, with no reports of harm to US personnel or damage to facilities, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials in Hormozgan said US strikes destroyed two water storage reservoirs in the southern province. The director of the regional water company told local media more than 20,000 residents had lost access to safe drinking water, the FT reported.

What they said: “Following overnight events, we need to re-assess (the diplomatic path with Washington) ... any diplomatic process requires a minimum stable environment,” Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.

Fox News reported Trump had told the publication in a phone interview that he was close to ordering new strikes on Iranian power plants and bridges, though the channel did not provide a direct quote.

The numbers: Brent crude rose 1.9% to USD93.19 a barrel after Trump’s post.
