The news: Former president Donald Trump has won the New Hampshire Republican primary, bringing him another step closer to the party's nomination and an election rematch with US president Joe Biden later in 2024, Associated Press reports.

The numbers: With 23% of votes counted, Trump has secured 52.6% support from republican voters, edging-out Nikki Haley on 46.6%. Ron DeSantis secured 0.6% after pulling out of the race on Sunday.

The context: New Hampshire had been widely tipped as Haley's best chance at securing a state. Nevada and the Virgin Islands are technically the next contests, but the 24 February vote in South Carolina — where Haley was governor for over half a decade — is expected to be the next major showdown. Michigan's primary takes place three days later on 27 February.
