UK regulators clear way for Microsoft's Activision takeover

The news: The biggest acquisition in gaming history is set to go ahead after the UK's competition watchdog approved Microsoft's USD69 billion takeover of Activision Blizzard, Bloomberg reports. The Competition and Markets Authority said Microsoft's plans to to sell some game rights to Ubisoft assuaged any of its competition concerns.

The numbers: The deal is worth USD69 billion ($109.3 billion). Activision is the creator of Candy Crush, a popular game in the USD93 billion mobile gaming market.

The context: Activision Blizzard is also responsible for popular video games including Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. Microsoft has been accumulating games companies in recent years, as it tries to bring more games to Windows PCs and its Xbox, which is currently third behind Nintendo and Sony PlayStation in the battle for gaming console supremacy.
