Ukraine hits Moscow in major drone attack on Russian capital
The news: Ukraine carried out its largest drone attack on Moscow since Russia's invasion in 2022 on Tuesday, hours before a Kyiv delegation was due to meet with US representatives for peace talks in Saudi Arabia.
The numbers: The Russian defence ministry said it shot down 337 Ukrainian drones, 91 of those targeting Moscow. 126 drones were downed over the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have recently been withdrawing. At least two people were reported killed and 18 more injured.
The context: Moscow’s four airports suspended flights due to the drone attack, forcing dozens of flights to be diverted. The airports have since reopened and resumed flights.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US national security adviser Mike Waltz are meeting with high level Ukrainian representatives today in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to repair relations and gauge whether Ukraine is willing to make concessions to reach peace with Russia.
President Donald Trump has upended US policy on the conflict, by suspending military assistance and pausing intelligence sharing with Kyiv, and abandoning a minerals deal that would have ensured continued US military aid. The US has also been engaging directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump is sending envoy Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow this week to meet with Putin, as the US President increases pressure on the countries to reach a ceasefire agreement.
