Ukraine military says it hit Russian Black Sea oil refinery
The news: Ukraine attacked Russian energy infrastructure on the Black Sea for the third time in November, as US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll met with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi on Monday and Tuesday to discuss a peace deal.
The context: A statement on Telegram shared by Ukraine’s General Staff shared on Tuesday said: “Units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, in close cooperation, successfully hit the Sheskharis oil terminal in Novorossiysk as well as the Tuapse oil refinery.”
It added that devices for loading and unloading oil onto tankers were hit, while a Russian A-60 reconnaissance aircraft was struck during an attack on the Beriev military plant.
Ukraine has been intensifying its attacks on Russian energy facilities, with this the third attack in November alone, as it works to impede the Kremlin’s ability to finance the war.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted and downed 116 Ukrainian drones over the Black Sea and another 76 over the Krasnodar region, where the bulk of Russia’s southern energy infrastructure is located.
The attacks come as Driscoll met with Russian officials in the UAE to try to progress the US-Russia peace deal first drafted earlier in November. US President Donald Trump has previously given a deadline of 27 November to secure Ukraine’s backing for his proposal.
