Ukraine strikes Russian industrial facility in Saratov region
The news: Ukrainian drones struck an industrial facility in Russia’s southern region of Saratov on Saturday night, as Ukraine continues its efforts to target Russia’s energy infrastructure.
The context: Bloomberg reports that Ukraine targeted the Saratov oil refinery, with videos on Russian social media showing fires and clouds of black smoke in the area of what was said to be the Rosneft PJSC-operated refinery. The incident has not yet been independently verified.
Governor of the Saratov region Roman Busargin said via Telegram that "Several residents required medical assistance...Aid was provided onsite, and one person has been hospitalised. Unfortunately, one person has died."
Russian air defence units destroyed 121 Ukrainian drones in the attack, including eight over Saratov, the Russian defence ministry said. Busargin did not specify what kind of industrial site was damaged.
Ukrainian media reported that the oil refinery in the city of Saratov was on fire after a drone attack.
The news comes after US President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday this week in Alaska to discuss the war. European leaders have criticised the meeting for excluding Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky from the talks.
Zelensky on Saturday said that Kyiv will not cede territory to Russia as part of any peace agreement.
Last week, the US imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods over the country’s purchasing of Russian energy, after talks between Washington and Moscow failed to achieve a breakthrough.
