Union writes to Bendigo Bank CEO and MPs over regional bank closures
The news: The Finance Sector Union (FSU) has written to Bendigo Bank CEO Richard Fennell in a bid to block the regional lender's closure of 10 local bank branches.
The numbers: Bendigo is set to begin closing the branches on 1 August, with the final branch slated to close on 31 October. The closures comprise six regional branches in Victoria and two in both Queensland and Tasmania.
The FSU said the move will end local banking in five regional communities and terminate 32 full-time equivalent roles.
The context: The union has also written to the local MPs in the affected communities asking them to intervene, and contacted Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Daniel Mulino.
What they said: "To close 10 branches, five in regional communities with no other bank branch, is a slap in the face from a bank which most Australians know as the largest regionally based bank, and a supporter of regional communities," said FSU national secretary Julia Angrisano.
