The news: US regulators have agreed to proceed with antitrust investigations into the roles Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry, the New York Times reported.

The context: A deal between the US Justice Department and the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate the three major AI companies is expected to be completed in the next few days, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

The agreement will see the Justice Department lead an investigation into whether the behaviour of Nvidia — the world's biggest AI chipmaker and second most valuable company as of Wednesday's close — had violated antitrust laws.

Meanwhile, the FTC will examine the conduct of ChatGPT maker OpenAI and its major investor Microsoft.

Both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have led efforts by the US government to rein in big tech companies vying for power in the race to dominate the emerging AI industry.

Last year, the FTC opened an investigation into whether OpenAI had harmed consumers through its collection of data. In January, the agency opened an inquiry into strategic partnerships between tech majors and AI startups, such as Microsoft's USD13 billion ($19.5 billion) backing of OpenAI, and investments by Google (USD2 billion) and Amazon (USD4 billion) in Anthropic.

Spokespeople for the Justice Department and the FTC declined to comment.
