The news: The US Senate has passed a temporary funding measure that would end the longest government shutdown in the country's history.

The numbers: The 60-40 vote passed with support of nearly all Republican senators and eight Democrats.

The context: The deal is set to restore funding for federal agencies after the shutdown reached its 41st day. It would also block President Donald Trump's push to cut the federal workforce, preventing layoffs until 30 January.

The proposal will now head to the House of Representatives, where speaker Mike Johnson has said it would likely pass as soon as Wednesday local time.
