US Senate passes US$95b aid package that also forces sale of TikTok
The news: The US Senate has passed a USD95.3 billion ($146.06 billion) emergency foreign aid package that also forces the sale of TikTok.
The numbers: The measure contains funding for Ukraine (USD60 billion), Israel ($26.3 billion), Taiwan and Indo-Pacific ($8.1 billion), along with humanitarian aid for Gaza, and sanctions on Russia and Iran and the TikTok provision.
The context: The measure now goes to the desk of President Joe Biden, who has previously said he would quickly sign it into law.
TikTok now faces a ban in the US unless its Chinese owner ByteDance divests within a year, though it's expected that the company will launch a legal challenge.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a court dispute would likely require judges to weigh the national security objectives of the ban against the First Amendment rights of TikTok and its users.
