US Supreme Court to hear TikTok appeal
The news: The US Supreme Court said it will hear TikTok’s appeal against a federal law that could ban the app unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells it to a US entity, media reported.
Arguments were scheduled on an unusually expedited basis for 10 January 2025, as the law is due to take effect on 19 January.
The context: TikTok argues the law, which has been approved by congress, violates free speech rights. A federal appeals court upheld it on national security grounds, citing risks of data access and content manipulation by the Chinese government.
The outgoing Biden administration also defends the legislation, which could see TikTok removed from app stores and inaccessible to new users.
It comes as President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office one day after the law is due to take effect, has recently expressed newfound support for TikTok, crediting its role in swaying young voters during the recent election.
