US targets Brazil with proposed 25% tariff
The news: The Trump administration is proposing a new 25% tariff for Brazilian goods including coffee, beef, some fruits and aircraft parts, citing unfair trade practices.
The numbers: A hearing on the proposed 25% tariffs will take place on 6 July, while Brazil has until 15 July to take “responsive action”, according to a statement from US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The context: According to US findings, Brazilian policies related to digital trade and electronic payment services place an “unreasonable or discriminatory and burden or restrict US commerce.”
The US imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports last year, while pressuring the country to halt its prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s former president. Most of the tariffs were later rolled back.
