US to widen sanctions on semiconductor chip sales to Russia: Bloomberg
The news: The US government will widen sanctions on the sale of semiconductor chips and other goods to Russia, unnamed people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
The context: On Wednesday, the Biden administration will announce changes to broaden the scope of existing export controls and restrictions on US-branded goods, with semiconductor chips a central part of the amendments.
The move will target third-party sellers in China and elsewhere, including identifying the addresses of Hong Kong entities the US believes are sending goods to Russia.
While the US and its allies continue to curb Moscow's access to technologies supporting its war effort, Russia is sourcing semiconductor chips from third-party countries, which can be used for missiles and other critical inputs.
US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed the new measures were imminent, but declined to discuss details.
What they said: "We’re going to continue to drive up costs for the Russian war machine, and this week we will announce an impactful set of new sanctions and export control actions," Kirby told reporters on Tuesday.
