Vulcan Energy begins lithium chemicals production at Europe plant
The news: Vulcan Energy has announced production of battery-quality lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM) at its plant in Germany, the first of its kind in Europe.
The context: Vulcan said its production of LHM has met product purity specifications at the company's downstream lithium plant in Frankfurt.
The milestone follows the start of operations at the site in November. Vulcan said it will strengthen Europe's raw material independence and advance the green mobility transition.
LHM from the plant will be used in ongoing qualification processes with Vulcan's European-focused offtakers, including Stellantis, Renault, LG and Umicore.
Meanwhile, Vulcan is continuing construction of its Lionheart project. It is expected to be the largest lithium resource in Europe and a tier-one lithium project globally, supplying low cost sustainable lithium for European electric vehicle batteries.
What they said: "This is a major milestone for Vulcan and demonstrates the final step in establishing a first fully domestic and integrated supply chain in Europe producing battery grade LHM from a local resource," said Vulcan CEO Cris Moreno.
